Andrew Moore Solicits Donations from Washington

Andrew Moore was a Continental Army Veteran who served as an inaugural member of the US House of Representatives.

Andrew Moore

Andrew Moore had just finished studying law under George Wythe when the Revolutionary War broke out.

Moore left his young practice to join the war effort, serving for several years in the Continental Army before joining the Virginia militia.

He rose through the ranks of Virginia society, spending several years in the State Assembly.

Congressman

Moore represented his community at the Virginia Ratification Convention where he supported the US Constitution.

He was rewarded by receiving election as an inaugural member of the House of Representatives, spending eight years serving in that body.

During this time he served on several committees and notably made recommendations to the Cabinet for appointments on the western frontier.

Washington Academy

Back in 1782, Andrew was an original Trustee of the Liberty Hall Academy.

This was one of the first universities established after the Revolutionary War (it was quickly renamed Washington Academy and today is known as Washington College).

By 1798 Moore took the lead in convincing George Washington to donate 100 shares of the James River Company to the Academy in an effort to keep the institutional afloat.

Senator

About this time, Moore returned to private life for several years.

In 1804 he was sent as a temporary replacement to the United States Senate, but seems to have done a good job and went back for his own term after that.

Meanwhile, Andrew continued serving in the Virginia Militia and was eventually chosen as a Major General in that organization.
