Founders Who Fell - 6 Revolutionaries to Remember This Memorial Day (2020)

Just like I did last year, I thought I’d celebrate Memorial Day by highlighting several of the American Revolutionaries who died during the war.

This article contains some of those fallen soldiers who are often over look.

*Please note: there are thousands of soldiers who died during the Revolutionary War. This is just a selection of several who I have already covered.

Francis Mallory’s Last Stand at Waters Creek

Francis Mallory was a Colonel who was captured during the war and released on the condition that he not fight again in the Revolutionary War. Mallory fought anyway and was later targeted for this decision.

Pipe Smoke at Oriskany - The Dedication of Nicholas Herkimer

Herkimer was a Brigadier General fighting in New York when he was wounded keeping a large British force from attending the Battle of Saratoga. He was propped up on a tree and calmly smoked a pipe while ordering his men in the field. Technically, he died days later due to a botched amputation, but we’ll make an exception here.

Francis Nash is Not the Enemy

Francis Nash was a self made man who eventually became a Brigadier General in the Continental Army. He was killed by a cannonball during the Battle of Germantown. Nashville, TN is named in his honor.

Revenge Hanging - Joshua Huddy and the Charles Asgill Affair

Joshua Huddy was hung in as revenge for a British Officer who was mistreated at the hands of the Patriots. His death was viewed as a murder and he was considered a martyr to the cause.

Isaac Hayne Symbolizes British Atrocity

Much like Frances Mallory, Isaac Hayne disobeyed his parole agreement to return to fight with the Patriots. Much like Joshua Huddy, he was hung.

Dr. Joseph Warren and the Birth of a Revolution

I’m surprised I forgot to mention Dr. Warren last year. He was one of the leading rebels in early Boston. Turned down an appointment as Major General to die “up to my knees in blood” at Bunker Hill.

If you want to learn more about a fallen founder, I recommend ‘Fallen Founder'.

Christian Di Spigna’s book about Joseph Warren is not only a well researched recounting of his life, but a deep dive into living in pre-Revolutionary Boston.
