Weathering the Storm - William Hindman's Frightening Trip to Massachusetts

William Hindman was a Continental Congressman, US Representative and Senator who was quite shaken by a boat ride through a storm.

William Hindman

William Hindman was a young Maryland attorney when the American Revolution Broke out.

Hindman joined Maryland’s revolutionary government as one of its Treasurers.

During these uncertain times, many of the States in transition made decisions we might find questionable. Maryland decided to split up the duties of Treasurer and William oversaw the Eastern Shore.

Continental Congress

Hindman left the position of Treasurer in 1777 when he was elected to the State Senate.

He continued in the Senate for most of the next decade before moving over to the Continental Congress for two years.

William did not stand out much from his contemporaries during this time, though he did make one of Sarah Livingston Jay’s famous party lists.

A Terrifying Ordeal

In 1788, Hindman was on a ship travelling north to Massachusetts that was hit by a nor’easter that almost capsized he and his fellow travelers.

The ship was in distress, but fortunately found assistance from a doctor and several crew members of a nearby vessel.

On board, William was found, “almost terrified to death,” according to Abigail Adams who just happened to be on the second ship.

Federalist

Hindman would go on to receive election to the United States House of Representatives, where he spent most of the 1790’s.

He would follow this up by temporarily replacing an open seat in the Senate.

As a Federalist, he saw the approaching takeover of the Democratic-Republican Party and, after 25 years of public service, retired to private life and his law practice.

It’s difficult to figure out an appropriate book to recommend for this particular Founder.

‘The Reluctant Rebels’ is a fun book about the entire life of the Continental Congress.
